 For Osvaldo Rios, who is in the final preparatory stages toward leaving Puerto Rico tomorrow, 24 hours a day have been far from enough in recent days. The actor who spent the whole year in his homeland after his 10-year absence has got himself in gear to go into another work season.
The next project which is considered to take at least year and a half is “Pecado Mortal” and “La muerte en vida”.
“Pecado Mortal” is the TV drama produced by Televisa and written by Caridad Bravo Adams who has achieved successes in “Los ricos tambien lloran (The Rich Also Cry)”, “Imperio de cristal (Crystal Empire)”, “Corazon salvaje (Wild at Heart)”, and so on. The cast of the drama, in which Rios will act as Diego, will include Arnaldo Andre, Victoria Ruffo, Fernando Colunga, Leticia Calderon, and Cesar Evora.
“In this project I was asked guest appearance as the main-class role for the first 15 episodes.
The story extends back over 30 years and my character is going to solve the various mysteries,” the actor told in the interview about the show.
The program, which will start to televise in March in Mexico is planned to be shot in Mexico City and Chiapas, near the areas of Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion National’s action. “I’ve known the guerrillas and I think I’ve been keeping track of the reasons of their uprising to the bone. I believe I can see the situation well not only by reading a newspaper about it but also through talking with them directly. As in the case of Vieques, I can acquire a lot of knowledge from press report. However, as far as I’m concerned, I didn’t understand the situation sufficiently until I personally visited Vieques and had talks with people such as Prieto Ventura and Alba Encarnacion. They spoke to me wholeheartedly so I could really figure out what they truly wanted there.”
The shooting of the work will take from 30 to 35 days and after that Rios is going to leave for Colombia to shoot “La muerte en vida”, the serial drama by Julio Jimenez who wrote “La viuda de Blanco” in which he starred a few years ago. These two dramas have several things in common such as the same author as well as the same production company, R.T.I. and the similar casting. The main role is Susana Torres and her rival is Maria Elena Doering, who performed the heroine in “La viuda de Blanco”.
The character he is going to play is Hugo de Mendoza, who is a rich and young bachelor and suffers from symptoms of catalepsy. The disease is syndrome which puts the patient into vegetative and virtually dead state. He says, “I mean, the patient becomes the state which is judged dead clinically for about 24 hours. The story begins from the scene he is buried alive.”
The quite characteristic things in Jimenez’s works are that romance is not a main element of the stories, and that the stories are full of magic realism, suspense and profound themes. “He is called Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Colombian TV world”, he told.
Rios is leaving extremely satisfied with the work he has achieved during this stay in Puerto Rico. He performed in “Los hijos de nadie (Nobody’s Children)”, “Una pasion en el espejo (Passion in the Mirror)”, TV drama “Despues del adios (After Good-by)”, and “Beauty and the Beast”. “I could catch up with my friends, family, co-workers and actors I hadn’t seen for a long time, and the Puerto Rico entertainment industries since I came back. This stay was very productive because I could achieve what I had left unfinished in 1991. I was able to see many young talented people and felt they were quite positive, which gives me a lot of hope”, he said.
Rios thinks that it will be easier for him to adjust himself to life in Mexico this time than his first 2-year stay. He already has several friends and a housekeeper who waited on him and did all the housework last time. She learned how to cook Puerto Rican cuisine. “My mom will often visit me and my brothers and my son will come, too.”
Rios is going to visit his son Giuliano in New York twice a month and is planning to return to Puerto Rico as soon as possible.
In 2001 Rios will go to Mexico again to shoot the new version of the TV drama written by famous Delia Fiallo, “Una muchacha llamada Milagros”, in which he acted the main role. The heroine hasn’t been decided yet.
